Graffiti activity:
Organize everyone into groups using the colour cards. On each of the 5
tables is a piece of chart paper with a question on it. Each group will start at a different table. We will ring a bell after 5 min. and then the groups will move to the next
table. When they have commented on all
five of the questions the groups will go back one table and comment on the
comments and so on till everyone has had a chance to answer all the questions
and then comment on the all answers. We
will then gather back as a group and discuss the questions and comments. Any other questions or comments may come up
at this time. We will circulate to see how it is going.
Questions
1. Interest: Which part of
this book did you find the most engaging?
The characters, setting or the mystery itself.
2. Emotions/Soul/Spirit: “...I don’t believe in
heaven or hell. Oh I believe in God, but not the God we hear so much about.”
Margaret continued, “There is only one God, of course, but I don’t believe for
a moment that he wants us to obey rules without questioning them, or be unkind
to anybody who falls short.”
What do you
think about Margaret’s theology?
3. Mind: “I don’t like
villages...I didn’t like being asked presumptuous questions by complete
strangers on the street...Cities, of course, can also make a person feel alone.
In London, you look at those who pass you by and you have no idea what is going
on in their minds. Each one looks utterly closed to you and mysterious. In
villages the same rule applies, except that you suspect it is the same thing
going on in every mind.”
Would you rather be a
stranger in a village or a city? Why?
4. Writing Quality: What do you think of the Edward Catchpool
character?
5. Enthusiasm: What do you
think of authors writing stories using another author’s characters, even in the
case, as is here, where the estate has approved the use of the character? Would you read another Poirot story by Sophie
Hannah?
